UI/UX Design

Three Years
Brief | Introduction & Role
At Promodel Corporation, now BigBear.ai, my role as a UI/UX Designer revolved around crafting solutions for a supply chain and logistics company specializing in cybersecurity and autonomous systems for government and defense.
Our mission was to translate complex operational experiences into tailored solutions for customers. With over half of the 3.5 million military personnel having interacted with our programs, the challenge lay in managing and accessing vast amounts of data efficiently, addressing the diverse needs of personnel across different regions and experiences.
I was the sole UI/UX Designer on the "Project Alpha" team, responsible for leading communication, designing HTML/CSS features, and ensuring they met rigorous UX standards. The goal was to establish Project Alpha as the comprehensive information hub accessible to all military branches at various levels, requiring a secret clearance to communicate effectively in the military space.
Learning & Growth
My learning journey involved deeply understanding how users interacted with "Project Alpha" and identifying areas for navigation improvement. Patterns emerged from customer feedback, highlighting concerns about filtering, page flow, and maintaining accurate data logs as the ultimate source of truth.
By immersing myself in customer meetings, I gathered invaluable insights to evaluate usability, enabling the formulation of key design principles:
- Upholding data integrity
- Granting users control and freedom in information usage
- Implementing visual error prevention measures
- Ensuring consistency across the application
- Prioritizing user recognition and efficiency (following a form follows function mentality)
- Emphasizing meticulous documentation
These principles guided the design of features facilitating easy navigation, streamlined data entry, and visual systems for quick information retrieval, catering to our diverse customer base without overwhelming them with complexities.
Takeaways
My three years at Promodel were transformative. Being the sole UI/UX expert on the project pushed me to assume leadership, taking ownership of the design process and diving into uncharted territories. This experience not only expanded my skill set but also emphasized the vital role of effective communication with both customers and my team for project success.
Ultimately, this journey underscored the immense value of communication and leadership in driving successful UX/UI design, paving the way for continuous learning and growth in my role as a designer.
